The Anatomy of the Isnad
The 'Isnad' (chain of narration) is the unique hallmark of Islamic history. The scholars of Hadith, the 'Muhaddithun', created a biographical database ('Asma al-Rijal') of thousands of narrators. They analyzed their memory (Dabt), their moral integrity ('Adalah), and their teacher-student proximity to detect the slightest flaw or fabrication.
Beyond Simple Recording
A Hadith was not accepted simply because it sounded pious. It had to pass the test of 'Matn' (textual analysis). Does it contradict the Quran? Does it contradict established historical facts? This dual-check system—narrator and content—remains a marvel of scientific inquiry.
